Well, its that time of year again. The one where everyone knows just exactly what everyone else in the household is going to say, before they say it. At least on some subjects. I entertained one of our house guests by predicted the usual responses to such questions as: Question: "has anyone seen the tree stand?" Answers: "I think someone saw it in the workshop.." followed by, "why don't you try the turf shed," and "what does it look like?".... This year the winner (for the second ye...
Well, I did manage to get to sleep last night, eventually. Though its 2:30 am this morning, so I'm not sure how great I'm doing on the regular bedtime thing. But tonight I have an excuse, tonight (or this morning, which ever you prefer) I got distracted in a good cause. I was attempting to help out my husband's new jewelery business and explore my inner artist at the same time. Or, to put it another way, I got out my old archeology text books and tried my hand at making little wax Goddess...
Well, its that time of year here in Northern Europe. That wonderful season when you can almost miss the daylight if you forget to look out the window. Its not that it isn't there, its just so cloudy and dark, that you may not notice it. And, it doesn't last all that long. Sunrise (if you can see it) is about 9am and sundown is about 4 pm. Our friend from Germany says this is because Ireland is really in the wrong time zone, but I'm not sure about that. In Sweden, the sun rises at 10 am...
Well, things are slowly getting back to the 21st century here at Kilmurry House. First, we experienced the arrival of our wonderful, new, German Dishwasher mid-week. This miracle of engineering let me collapse three hours work into about 15 minutes. Which, since my foot still hates me, is a very good thing. Of course, most folks wouldn’t need three hours to do the dishes, but I had to include the hour of stove feeding it would take to heat enough water to wash them. Even with a dishwasher...
Well, Disaster Cat and her family just got back from Dublin having picked up husband and hopefully concluded part one of a long, involved journey. Otherwise known as: Buying a New Dishwasher. Easy you might think, what could be so very hard about searching for a dishwasher that an entire web blog could be written about it? Well, if you are a North American who has moved to either Ireland or the UK, you probably already know the answer. For the rest of you, I can fill you in. Compar...
Greetings everyone out their in Blog Land, I have been asked by several people, who only know me from this website, how in the world did a semi-hippie chick from California wind up in rural Ireland. Like most stories at Kilmurry House, this one is a bit strange, and has a short version, a long version and a even really longer version (for those winter nights when you are having mulled red wine and the power is out). I've decided to start with the more-or-less shorter version as the r...
Well, lets see, where to begin. I didn't post about this before, because I wanted to make sure this blog had a happy ending. And now that I am reasonably confident that it will, I can explain what Disaster Cat has been doing for the past week.... It seems that in one of those twists of fate that just seem to happen around here, about three hours after my husband left to go Boar Hunting in Germany I found his favorite cat, Hagan; barely alive in his office. Sometimes, I don't even check ...
Well, Disaster Cat has been off-line for a couple of weeks, due to the visit of her DH's mother. Now, my mother-in-law loves to clean and organize things. And those of you following the Disaster Cat story know that just before Disaster Cat had her foot surgery, she was experimenting with a web site that was supposed to help organize and clean your house. Or rather, help YOU organize YOUR house, a web-page that would actually clean your house for you would create the world's biggest net-tra...
Those of you following the Disaster Cat Saga the last couple of weeks, know that I have been laid up with a rather nasty post-operative infection in my foot. This has lead to a rather eclectic diet lovingly provide by husband and friends. A diet which has consisted of everything from frozen pizza to fresh killed chickens. Also a large share of store bought rolls, crackers, peanut butter, dried fruit and a complete absence of vegetables. While guessing what culinary marval was coming next...
In Viking Times, the month of October had a different name. A name, which loosely translate "Slaughter Month." This was the time of year, before modern agriculture (around the 1700's) that a householder had to decide which of his very few animals he could afford to feed through the long Winter. The rest of the critters would be salted down, dried, smoked or otherwise processed to provide the family with meat for the Winter. It wasn't just Scandinavians that did this, almost all pre-indust...
Greetings everyone in Blog land. I have not been able to post for a couple of days, mostly due to our very bad weather and lack of internet service. After three hours the other night I gave up trying to download e-mail and last night was not much better. But a high pressure ridge is allowing our land line to work a little bit (no broad band out here in the country side) and while 1440 may be slow, it does allow for some access. Even if it is more like the World Wide Wait than the World ...
Greetings everyone, I am trying to write this in-between gale force winds hitting the window of my work room. Its a bit distracting, but so far not too scary. At least I don't have to worry about the bad weather affecting our planned trip to Scotland where The Wolf was scheduled to fight for my honor. That's because, I won't be going anywhere any time real soon. And anywhere seems to include the first two floors of our house! My foot is much improved (according to my own doctor) but th...
Greetings everyone in Blog Land...let see, this morning started out to a be a real pain. And I mean it was both real and a pain. At what I thought was around dawn (because the sky was so dark) I woke up to a throbbing foot, which would simply not let me roll back over and get to sleep. Not that cats would let me anyway. At which point I disover that it is 9am and time to get up anyway. K also realize that what the surgeon called a "don't worry about it, sure, it will be fine in 10 days o...
Well, despite an exciting early week of power failures and dirty laundry, Disaster Cat managed to find time to go to Dublin and have the deep wart on her foot taken care of. It was not fun, and the traffic going home had husband going nuts before it was all over. Still, it was not as bad as I expected (they have made great strides in numbing sensitive body parts before sticking needles in them) and was over pretty quickly. The trip took most of the day though, and when I got back I was sup...
Greetings everyone to everyone reading this. As you can tell by the fact that I am on the computer, we do have our electricity back on. The day was a bit easier to deal with this time, mostly due to the Thermos full of hot tea I had ready this morning. But the rain and hail storms did not go down well...though I did manage to read most of the Sunday newspaper. The phone also kept working, which meant we could keep in touch with everyone. But only if we were willing to shiver in the hallw...
